Skin Disease

Skin disease
or dermatosis is any disease or condition affecting the skin. There has been a wide array of skin conditions and diseases that have been described, but only a handful of those result in visits to the doctor's office. The treatment for dermatosis depends on the kind of condition that the patient has. The goal of treatment, however, remains the same and that is the preservation of skin integrity and the relief of any discomfort that the condition may be causing the patient.

Skin Disease in History

The treatment of skin diseases generally fall under dermatology. In the late 16th century, Forli resident Geronimo Mercuriali completed the first known scientific work on dermatology. He called it De Morbis Cutanesis or 'On the Diseases of the Skin'.

Skin problems also played a significant role during the first World War as it is estimated that over two million days worth of service was lost to skin problems alone.

Common Skin Disorders

Below is a few of the most common skin complaints brought to the emergency room of a hospital or to the dermatologists office.

  • Acne
  • Dry Skin (Xerosis)
  • Psoriasis
  • Sebaceous Cysts
  • Calluses and Corns
  • Keratosis
  • Roscea
  • Itchy Skin (Pruritus)
  • Dermatitis
  • Skin Lesions
  • Skin Allergies

The mucus membrane is also a part of the skin and any conditions affecting it are considered skin problems. Some of the most common mucus membrane problems include cold sores and thrush.

Diagnosis

Some skin diseases may be easier to diagnose than others because they present symptoms unique to that condition alone. In some instances, however, the presenting symptoms are harder to identify. Diagnosis of a skin problem can include something as simple as observation or more complex tests like biopsies.

Treatment

Patients suffering from skin problems must remember that even the most common skin conditions can lead to serious complications if left untreated.

When a diagnosis has been made, attention then turns towards the treatment of skin diseases. Treatment can be as benign as simple cooling and itch relieving bath or it can include phototherapy, which may be helpful in relieving itching and even help control the relief of pimples.

Invasive treatments may also be necessary when it comes to skin disease. Sebaceous cysts, for example, may require excision, drainage and the removal of the capsule. Skin cancers, on the other hand may require patients to undergo chemotherapy, radiation and even surgery to remove affected tissues.
