Skin Problems

'Skin problems' refers to a wide array of skin conditions and skin affecting the skin. Medically, skin issues are collectively referred to as 'dermatoses'. The problems may be caused by infection, irritation, or even mutation as is the case with cancer. Treating problems of the skin depends on kind of problems that a patient is having. Finding out the underlying cause of the issue may also be a part of the treatment procedure.
Common Skin Problems

There are thousands of identified and described skin problems today. Only a handful of those problems, however, are responsible for a majority of visits to the dermatologist's office. Below are some of the most common dermatoses that lead patients to seek medical attention

  • Impetigo
  • Contact Dermatitis
  • Scabies
  • Acne Skin Problems
  • Bed Sores
  • Unexplained Rashes
  • Topical Allergic Reactions
  • Psoriasis
  • Dry Skin Problems (Xerosis)
  • Itchy Skin (Puritus)
  • Cysts
  • Calluses
  • Keratits
  • Scaling, Blistering and Flaking
  • Inflammation
  • Fungal Infections
  • Eczema

Most of the problems mentioned above are not serious medical conditions although problems like scabies and impetigo may be contagious. Some conditions like xerosis and pruritus, if not treated can lead to problems like cellulitis and folliculitis.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing skin diseases can range from the simple and benign to complicated and invasive. Conditions such as xerosis and acne may be diagnosed through observation alone. More serious conditions such as cancer and infections may require diagnostic tests like biopsies and bacterial strain testing.

Treatment Goals

The treatment of skin diseases usually revolve around two goals, the first being relief of symptoms. The second goal in the treatment of dermatoses is linked with aesthetics.

Treating the disease and relieving any discomfort on the part of the patient is the foremost goal when it comes to the treatment of skin diseases. When an underlying condition is present, doctors may also have to treat as well.

The skin is perhaps the organ that is most closely associated with appearances. Any changes or damage to the skin can result in problems with the patient's self esteem.

It is, therefore important that the integrity of the skin is maintained and its appearance made to appear as normal as possible. This treatment goal for skin problems is especially true for patients suffering from acne, eczema, those who sustained burns, and patients with fungal infections that may lead to skin discoloration.
