Itchy Skin

Itchy skin
, medically known as 'pruritus', is condition characterized by an irritating sensation that can lead to the urge to scratch. It can be very uncomfortable for the patient and the constant scratching can lead to more serious complications later on. When it comes to treatment and long time relief, it is important to not only relieve dry itchy skin, but also to indentify its underlying causes and treat that as well.

Signs and Symptoms

Pruritus may occur in localized patches of skin on the body. It may also be a generalized sensation that affects all skin surfaces. In certain causes, itchiness may be the only symptom associated with a case of pruritus. The following, however, may also accompany the sensation of itchiness:

  • Redness
  • Dry and cracked skin
  • Scaly texture to skin
  • Leathery texture to skin
  • Bumps
  • Blisters

Treatment

Itchy skin can be treated with the help of medications such as salves and creams that are applied topically. Calamine lotion is a common product used in the relief of skin itch. Antihistamines may also be given. Some patients may find the use of wed dressings helpful in relieving the itch. A warm sitz bath or a bath in starchy water may also help relieve itching.

It is also important to identify the underlying cause of itchy skin. If, for example, it is determined that the itchiness is caused by allergies, patients should therefore avoid encountering allergens again and also take anti allergy medication.

Light therapy may also be used in the treatment of pruritus. This is said to deliver relief from itchiness. Light therapy, however, may require patients to undergo several sessions before results are observed.

When to Seek Medical Attention

The above symptoms may appear at the same time that the itchiness occurs or they can be a result of constant scratching. Some forms of pruritus may be treated at home, but patients should seek medical attention when:

  • The condition has no immediate explanation (e.g. no underlying allergies or irritation can be pinpointed)
  • It affects the entire body
  • It lasts for more than two weeks and shows no improvement with homecare
  • It is very severe that it affects the patient's daily activities and even sleep
  • It is accompanied by other symptoms such as weight loss, tiredness, changes in bowel habits and urination

It is also important to seek medical attention when the itchiness is accompanied by blistering itchy skin rash and bumps, breaks or redness.
